In India, millets are prevalent since ancient times. Millets contain more protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants as compared to wheat and rice. All these nutrients are very essential for weight loss and management of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, PCOS, knee pain, thyroid, high blood pressure, heart diseases, Joint pain etc. One more benefit of using millets is that it does not require pesticides which makes it chemical free grain.
For a long time we are using only wheat flour to make chapatti which has been associated with increased risk of non-communicable diseases., So now its high time that we all must include millets in our diet. Below I am sharing some millet and their health benefits. Except barley all the millets are gluten free and can be consumed by those who are sensitive to gluten or suffering from celiac disease.
1. Sorghum also known as jwar contains health beneficial compounds that help to reduce blood cholesterol level.

2. Finger millet also known as ragi is rich in calcium and magnesium which is needed for stronger bones and reduce the risk of fracture. Magnesium also helps in maintaining nerve function and energy production. It is used as a treatment in reducing migraine attacks.

3. Bajra is rich in magnesium, iron and zinc. Iron helps in the formation of haemoglobin or Red blood cells. Zinc helps in regeneration of new cells.. Besides this, bajra is also a very good source of tryptophan. Tryptophan controls our mood and sleep. That is why, if you are suffering from insomnia or have lot of stress, then you must include bajra in your diet.

4. Barley also know as jau helps to reduce blood sugar in diabetic patients as its glycemic index is lowest among all cereals. Barley is also rich in tryptophan which controls our mood and sleep.

5. Sanwa millet is rich in B vitamins and zinc which helps in energy production, creating new blood cells and maintaining healthy skin.
